Hi, I have realised that I never claimed the flat rate £6 per week tax relief for the 2020/21 tax year. That year I was solely on PAYE but now need to do self assessment since 2021/22 tax year. I went to see if I can claim the 2020/21 tax relief using the HMRC page for that but it doesn't seem possible if you need to do self assessment for 2022/23, but I note from answers to other questions that you can't claim the relief for previous tax years on a tax return for this year. So how do I now claim the relief for 2020/21?

Hi,

If you did not complete a return for tax year 2020 to 2021 you should be able to claim this online.

Thank you.

So can I confirm that it is acceptable to answer the question "Are you going to complete a Self Assessment return for this tax year 2022-2023?" as "no" even though the correct/truthful answer is actually "yes" as if I answer yes it simply tells me to claim through self assessment, even though I want to claim for a year other than 2022-23. If someone from HMRC can confirm that I can submit what is in effect an incorrect answer to allow me to complete the claim online I will do so as I would at least have this forum to point any investigation at... It feels to me like the questions in that online form are in the wrong order as if you do say "no" it then does ask which year you want to claim for, if that question was first it could then ask about self assessment for the relevant year...

Hi,

You are correct, you will need to say no to the 2022/23 question to allow you to make the claim.

Thank you.
