The business will not pay expenses for buying, for example breakfast or lunch, when travelling to construction sites and buildings, even though we are on the road from 06:00hrs and often not returning home until after 19:00hrs. Their expenses policy excludes these even through we believe they are reasonable and just expenses occurred in the course of our business requirements and working day. We have to travel to and from a temporary location buy food en-route and often the sites/locations are not city/town centre locations with easy access to services. How do we claim back these costs where the employer refuses to do so?

Hi,

The employment income manual at EIM31815 advises on subsistence expenses.

EIM31815 - Travel expenses: general: accommodation and subsistence: include associated subsistence

EIM31816 provides examples of subsistence expenses. You can check to see if you are eligible for subsitence expenses at and submit a claim online or by completing form P87.
