Have a laptop purchased March last year on ebay from a seller in Scotland (with ebay "receipt"). Had an issue with the laptop Feb this year. Got in touch with the manufacturer (Schenker, in Germany) who arranged for a warranty repair. Sent the laptop off to them end of March (via Parcelforce, they passed to DHL in Germany, docs proving both) Repaired. They've sent it back via UPS. UPS haven't been able to clear it through customs with the docs Schenker included in the return. Further docs were asked for from me + provided. There's still a £677 import fee being charged on having my laptop returned from warranty repair. I'm obviously in the "pickle" of: 1) Do I pay and reclaim, if so, how? I have an electronic copy of the export docs Schenker attached. I don't read German and don't know the codes that they should have used/etc. 2) Do I have to get UPS+Schenker to sort it out on my behalf or eat the import fees? I'm a £2k laptop or £677 import fees out of pocket at this point and looking for the suggested best way forwards.

If you have provided proof of prior export / uk purchase the goods and proof of a free of charge warranty repair you should be able to return to the UK without additional taxes . The UK export proof must be in English as HMRC do not accept export declarations in other languages.if you posted the goods from the UK that would be proof of posting. I can’t answer why UPS can’t clear with the documentation provided. If however they have already cleared the goods and already paid HMRC on your behalf as may be the case you will be in a position where you need to pay them an submit a duty reclaim to HMRC.How to claim a repayment of import duty and VAT if you've overpaid Ideally you should have exported the goods using the appropriate procedures below. Apply to pay less duty on goods you export to process or repair

Hi Paul L,
You can speak to couriers to see if they can amend the declarations to use correct procedures and claim relief from customs charges otherwise you can pay and
look into claiming a repayment.
More information on below link:

Thank you.
