I have the following enquiry regarding the sending of artworks into the UK for exhibition or sales purpose According to this page, when it enters the UK, both custom duty and VAT are required for clearing by Custom https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty However, when the artwork is later sold in the UK, VAT would be levied again. Does it mean that in this case the VAT would be doubly charged? Moreover, if the artwork is for exhibition purpose or eventually not sold and return to its country of origin, will it be possible to claim a refund of VAT or duty?

H,

There is an option to import goods under a temporary admission which will have the effect of suspending any VAT /duty on the import.

Please speak to our Customs Line regarding the options available on 03002003700.

Thank you.
