Hi I am the sole owner of a property that I live in currently. I received a job offer in another part of the country for the next year and will need to stay in the local accommodation as it is much easier to commute that way. However, I plan to keep my current property as my main residence (address for correspondence, GP, and leave most of my belongings here). If I rent out a furnished room in the house, can I claim rent a room relief? Thanks.

Hi,

To qualify for rent-a-room relief certain conditions must be met. There are only exceptional circumstances where you can qualify for relief when not living in your main residence.

You can find examples of when relief can be given when occupying job related accommodation here:

PIM4015 - Rent-a-room: going abroad and/or occupying job related accommodation

Thank you.
