HMRC's MTD for VAT Service does not provide an option for non-UK companies to register for MTD. The page asks to confirm the 'type' of client: If selecting 'Limited company' it asks for a Companies House company number which is course is non-applicable to non-UK companies. If selecting 'other', options such as charity or trust are available, but not "limited company". Please advise.

Hello,

If you’re unable to sign up an overseas business because you are being asked for information that only a UK based customer can give,
contact the VAT helpline, giving the VAT registration numbers and business names so that HMRC can amend the customer record.

This can take up to 14 days.

See Link:

VAT: general enquiries    .

Thank you.

Hi, Further to the above we have contacted the VAT telephone line and were advised that an 'indicator' needs to be updated on the system, following which the system will recognise the client as a non-UK company ("overseas trader") and will not request a Company Registration Number. It was now confirmed to us that this 'indicator' was successfully updated a couple of weeks ago. However, as of today the options shown online have not changed and when trying to register the client for MTD we are still asked to select the type of business. If selecting 'Limited company' it asks for a Companies House company number which of course is non-applicable to non-UK companies. If selecting 'other', options such as charity or trust are available, but not "limited company". Kindly can you assist.

Hi

Can you come back to our Helpline again as we will need to check on our systems that this overseas indicator has been correctly applied to the company and if it has we will need to look at why this isn't changing the nature of the questions for the MTD registration.

Thankyou.

Regards.

Hi, It seems that most helpline advisors know nothing about this. Is it possible to obtain a reference to internal guidance / procedures to be followed in this case, which we can quote to the adviser?

Hi

There is only internal guidance for this which the advisors should be able to follow.

I would contact the Helpline again and if they don't understand what they need to do then they should be escalating the call to a technician to identify the problem here.

Thankyou.

Regards.

I would like to explore this matter further as I believe it may be relevant to other agents in the same position. We have now been told by one of advisors at the VAT Helpline that the reason we are unable to register the overseas company (already VAT registered for many years) for MTD-VAT is because the client is already on the MTD Platform (ie the blue-themed ASA) even though they are not actually registered for MTD. As such, HMRC are unable to change the 'indicator' to an overseas trader, which should in turn result in the client not being asked to provide a UK company number (which they do not have). Can you kindly advise on how this should be handled? We have made numerous attempts to get the team to update the inidicator, but it keeps getting rejected for the reason explained above. Thank you.

Hi.

I can't why we can not  the apply an 'overseas indicator' to a company where they are based overseas.

It shouldn't matter if they are already on the MTD system or not.

If the online process is asking the questions that are asked of a UK based company then clearly the overseas marker needs
to be applied and there is a  process internally for doing this.

Our Helpline on 03002003700 can request this update and if this update is refused then the Helpline need to then request
with the digital team as to why it is being refused  .

Thank you.
