I received a reply to my CF83 on 10/09/2024 authorising Class 2 but for a period during 2 of those years and another period of 2 months, I was in fact unemployed abroad, which I believe may mean that for that period I may have to pay Class 3, not Class2. I have sent relevant information to HMRC and been advised not to pay for any of the available years until this period has been reassessed. It was suggested that that may take up to 31 weeks, which will of take us past the 5 April 2025 deadline for paying years 2018/19 and earlier. I have read on this forum that I should not be disadvantaged by any HMRC delays in dealing with my application but can you please confirm that in my situation the delays by you would mean I am protected from that deadline."

Hi Helen,
I can confirm that you will not be penalised by any delay that you will experience in receiving a reply from us.
Should our reply be issued to you close to the 5 April 2025 deadline then you will be given extra time to make any payment of voluntary National Insurance contributions.
Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. On my Government Gateway, I’ve looked up when to expect a reply to my letter and information I sent. It says November 2025. Please can you explain how that will affect the April 2025 deadline? Will I still be able to make the payments 6 months after the deadline, if I don’t receive a reply till the November?

Hi,
As you have submitted your request prior to 5 April 2025, I can confirm that you will not be penalised by our delays and that the time limits for you to make any payments of voluntary National Insurance contributions will be extended.
Thank you.
