Hi,
When you make your payment of voluntary National Insurance contributions, please allow 10 working days for your payment to be recorded on your
National Insurance account and then call our National Insurance Helpline 0300 200 3500 (from the UK) or +44 191 203 7010 (from overseas) and let
them know what tax years that you’d like your payment to go to.
Thank you.

Hi HH,
If your payment of voluntary class 2 National Insurance contributions is not reflected on your Personal Tax Account within the 8 weeks from making payment then you may wish to call the National Insurance Helpline:
National Insurance: general enquiries
So they can arrange for your payment to be allocated.
Once your payment has been allocated to your National Insurance account then the tax years concerned will be shown as qualifying on your Personal Tax Account no shortfalls of voluntary contributions will be shown.
Personal Tax Accounts always show shortfalls of voluntary contributions at the class 3 rate.
So, if you wish to pay current and future voluntary contributions at the class 2 rate whilst overseas then please complete and return CF83 application form which is available here:
Apply to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions when abroad (CF83)
You will be able to pay your voluntary contributions by direct debit through a UK or Channel Islands bank account or by annual payment when we send a request to you shortly after the end of the tax year.
If you would like to check your pension entitlement then please request a State Pension Forecast here:
Check your State Pension forecast
Thankyou.

I have received my Class 2 NIC shortfall rates for the years 2006 -2024 and wish to pay them in one lump sum (before the April 5th 2025 deadline). Do I have to visit my bank to set up the IBAN transfer? There is no online CIBC IBAN Transfer option in my web banking

I have applied for "national insurnace contributions" voluntary on line, and the form now says completed. 01/03/2025 Would this mean that I should receive the form shortly I live in Spain and I am not sure if I would receive the form before 5th April in order to make the payment What payment date would be quoted? I do not have a UK Bank account, so I would have to ask my mum to write a cheque

I have been loving abroad since May 2006 and have worked up until April 2020 when I became incapacitated for work.As I was on a low income before I became incapacitated and now received a much lower percentage of my last income I am living from below the social minimum. I would like to pay national insurance contributions at the class 2 rate as I simply can't afford the class 3 rate. Every time I ask to pay the class 2 rate I get sent a letter with an amount for the class 3. If you are working abroad and become incapacitated, why should you need to pay the higher amount when you are not able to. My sister also lives abroad and has a high salary but she is allowed to pay class 2, why can't I?

Hi Admin, Re. Class 2 shortfall payments from abroad. I called the +44 191 203 7010 number again today, could only manage 30 mins wait today so still did not get to talk with anyone. I did however note that the intro message has changed, can you please confirm what I heard? That any letters received and attempted payments made before April will be processed without "disadvantage" to the sender? What happens if the sender made an error here? will you call us to sort it out? I have just shy of 3000GBP sitting out there somewhere.

Hi All, I have been in Ireland for 17 years and didn’t keep up on voluntary payments. I’ve paid my Class 2 contributions for all years missed, paid at end of November 24 (still not on system). My wife has the first 6 years of Class 3 on her breakdown as she wasn’t working (caring for sick relatives). She has Class 2 for remaining years. Can just class 2 be paid and skip the first 6? She’s 47 so will continue to pay voluntary and catch up. Obviously the class 3 years add up to nearly £5000. Can I just pay through the back and put in the reference/notes that’s what we want to do. Any help would be appreciated. Only got a month. Many thanks

Hi Sharon2,
Any shortfalls of voluntary National Insurance contributions should be received by 5 April 2025. It is possible to pay voluntary contributions from an overseas bank account and the following link will give you the information that you may require:

Hi iain,
Your query seems to be that you’ve sent us £3000 and is waiting for us to allocate it to your National Insurance account.
If you are overseas, then our International Teams are currently about 32 weeks behind with the allocation of voluntary contributions.
If you are in the UK and it’s been more than 8 weeks since you made your payment then you may wish to call the National Insurance Helpline on 0300 200 3500 and they will be able to help you further.
Thank you.

Hi, I assume that I can pay all qualifying years in one payment, and then call the NI number in order to allocate to the relevant qualifying years. Is this correct?

Hi Sharon2,
If we send you a shortfall letter of voluntary National Insurance contributions close to the deadline of 5 April 2025, then we will extend the time limit by 31 days for you to make any payment that you may wish to make.
Thank you.

i applied on 24th sept 2024 using online CF83 to pay my NI shortfall, on my online HMRC , when i 'check progress" still says its in processing stage and not 'Completed' (so may not get processed by April deadline) Question 1. can i pay my shortfall amount now BEFORE i get a confirmation letter that i can pay class 2's i have spoken to the DWP and they have confirmed i only need to pay 6 yrs and the exact amount of class 2's i need to pay (just so that its sat in my a/c before April) then it just needs to be allocated to the years i want to pay (DWP said i can't tell you the years until i get conf. letter?) Question 2. what happens if i DON'T get my confirmation letter in time for April deadline? Can i still pay after the deadline in this case? Question 3. what is the importance of the funds being in my NI a/c before the deadline, does this matter? Please read my questions carefully as the answers you give are very important, i am getting conflicting info from when i ring and speak to HMRC Pens. compared to on here. Deadline fast approaching and i don't want to miss out thank you.

Hi Sarah Lee,
To be able to pay voluntary class 2 National Insurance contributions you must be either employed or self-employed overseas and normally employed or self-employed in the UK before your departure.
If you are now not employed/self-employed overseas then, unfortunately, you do not satisfy the conditions to pay the voluntary class 2 contributions.
Thank you.
