My wife has a fixed term bond that she wishes to gift to me before it matures. We have co-signed a deed of gift to that effect. The interest will arise at maturity and I expect the interest to form part of my income and also the associated tax liability. However, the institution in question will not accept the transfer of ownership, and will therefore report the interest income in my wife's name once it matures. Will the deed of gift satisfy HMRC that the gift was completed prior to the end of the term and reallocate the interest earned to me on that basis?

Hi,
The interest from the account when it matures, will be your wife's income, which she will need to declare.
There is no tax liability in the trasfer of a cash gift.
Thank you.

Dear HMRC Admin 8 - I am confused, as per HMRC website https://www.gov.uk/capital-gains-tax/gifts it states 'Your spouse or civil partner may have to pay tax on any gain if they later dispose of the asset. Their gain will be calculated on the difference in value between when you first owned the asset and when they disposed of it. In that case, the term bond can be gifted to spouse and when it matures the receiving spouse should pay the tax/gain which will be calculated on the difference in value between when you first owned the asset and when they disposed of it can you provide the HMRC manual or reference to confirm that the mid term bond cannot be gifted please? thank you

Hi connectiondue,
From your original question this is in relation to interest, so nothing is actually being sold for any Capital Gains Tax to be due.
As you have made the account a joint account, any interest now added is in joint names and split 50/50.
Thank you.
