Hi, I invested in EIS shares in the 23/24 tax year. I do not normally complete a self assessment as I pay tax through PAYE. I understand that I need to complete a self assessment to receive tax relief from the EIS investment. However, as I have missed the deadline for the 23/24 tax year and do not usually complete self assessment, there seems to be no way for me to do this online (only the 24/25 year is available for me to complete). Could you please advise how I go about completing a 23/24 tax return to claim the EIS tax relief? Thanks!

Hi,
If not already in SA, you will only need the return if you have invested over £33k. If not, you will need to send the EIS3 certificate to us for the relief to be applied.
This should be sent to
HMRC
PAYE & Self Assessment
BX9 1AS
Thank you.

Thank you for the reply. While researching how to claim the EIS tax relief, I requested a UTR. I have since received a tax return form for 2024/25, which says I need, by law, to complete it. As I've never completed one before I'm not sure if I actually need to, given that I only received it because of the EIS, for which I now realise I don't need to do a tax return. Even if I did complete a tax return for the EIS form, it would not be for the 2024/25 tax year. My question therefore is 1. Given the above, is it OK for me not to complete the tax return> 2. If yes to above, do I need to communicate to HMRC that I won't be completing the tax return? If so, how do I do this? As it states it's required by law I'd like to make sure I'm doing the right thing, however, I can't see any reason why I'd need to complete it. Thanks for your advice on this.

Hi ,

If your EIS claim is for the year 2023/2024, then you do not need to complete a 2024/2025 Tax Return -
you should then contact us

to update your records for the year 2024/2025 - please see the following link :

Self Assessment: general enquiries  .

Please also see the following link about the criteria for completing a Self Assessment Tax Return:

Thank you .

Once I've completed the EIS claim form, what address is the form sent to for processing? Thank you
