Hi there. Until March 31st I was able to log into my personal tax account using the post office gov.uk verify option. Since then, this service has stopped working. "You can no longer use GOV.UK Verify to prove your identity." Now that this service is gone, there is no way for me to log in my account as the only option is using the Government Gateway which is asking me for documents I do not possess. Why would you remove the GOV.UK Verify option if it was the only option for someone that does not hold a UK passport, a Northern Ireland driver's license or credit reference? As I was able to use this service just fine for years, I politely ask for an explanation and a solution to my problem. And no, filling out a paper option is not a feasible solution, since on the website you have all the details you need (employer's details, how much they have paid so far, etc.) in seconds. Thank you so much

Hi,

I can't comment on the policy decision to remove the use of gov.UK verify.

The only method for verifying will be through Government Gateway. There will be updates to the Verification journey in July.

Thank you.

Same problem here. I can’t access my personal tax account and NI contributions as I don’t have a British passport (only a French one, although I have settled status, and married to Brit for 30 years) and only have a Welsh Driving Licence, not an Irish one. Before, I could access no problem with Digidentity. No way to know what happened to some class 2/class 3 contributions I made last August 2021! Very worrying and unsettling. Hope we can get answers before next July! I spent more than an hour on the phone yesterday, just listening to the music, but no human agent picking up at all.

I have the same problem because I am Chinese settled in UK - I hope we get answers soon because I too could log in to Verify with Post Office fine for years but now I'm stuck and can't file a return any more. No words can describe my frustration!

Hi Tiberius Arpad Szabo

If you are unable to pass the verification questions for Government Gateway you will not be able to access the Personal Tax Account.

If you have an outstanding Tax Return this will need to be filed by paper.

Our Self Assessment department can confirm which parts of the return you will be required to complete.

Self Assessment: general enquiries

Thankyou.

Regards.

From today, you can use a English, Scottish or Welsh driving licence issued by the DVLA instead of just the NI licence option. Hope this helps.

Dear HMRC, I too am barred from entering my own personal tax information due to the restrictive Gateway access. I used to be able to access it via GOV.UK Verify and now I'm left with no alternative. Access to my personal tax account is of the utmost importance. If I didn't have access to it in the past, via GOV.UK Verify, I would never have noticed that my previous employer wasn't processing my tax returns correctly and I would've been in breach with HMRC without even knowing. It is unfathomable to think that with so many expats, European or otherwise, living in the UK, you have decided to implement such a restrictive measure, without any alternatives, which denies us the most basic of rights, which is to check that our information is correct and up to date. This is clearly not a single person's issue and yet you continue to close your eyes to the problem. When do you plan to solve this? Is this not in direct GDPR breach? I look forward to a resolution to this matter as so many other thousands in the same situation. Thank you.

Hi All, writing about this as I thought it might help someone who will be facing similar issue. Issue : Access code issue which is asked after entering your "Government Gateway user ID" and "password" Background : I was looking to file my income tax return for financial year ending 5th April 2022. I returned to my country from UK on 12th Feb 2022. Was not having active UK phone number, driving license, etc. Resolution : 1. Enter your "Government Gateway user ID" and "password" 2. Click on change access codes. 3. I used credit card details(not necessary you need to have a credit card but they ask for other options) and last tax paid details (amount - I paid 1.60 as additional charge last year and date of transaction is required) and also details like where I last stayed in UK, DOB, etc. were asked to enter. 4. After successful validation they give you 3 options to get the access code - i. SMS(this can be anywhere in the world) this is what I preferred. ii. Call(Only UK nos. accepted) iii. Through app 5. You need to login again and each time you will receive the access code. Hope this will be helpful. You can always contact HMRC Helpline if nothing works. Many Thanks!
