I recently submitted a claim for tax relief on contributions made to a personal pension during FY24/25. I am now living outside the UK and have declared myself a non-UK tax resident. If the claim is approved, what form would the tax refund take? Is the pension topped up directly by HMRC, do I receive a cheque for the amount of the relief, or something else? Any help much appreciated.

Not HMRC...no the pension wont be topped up, any additional releif is given by extending your basic rate tax band in the calculation of tax for the year (therby giving releif for the payment at your highest rate of tax) and if a refund is due the refund would normally be sent by cheque or you can ask for bank payment...HMRC will not pay to account outside of UK.

Hi ,

If you are a PAYE customer, any repayment due after the relief is applied should be available to claim via your Personal Tax Account.

If this method is unavailable to you, you can request it be issued as a cheque, or be paid to a nominee in the
UK - contact us by webchat, phone or post via :

Income Tax: general enquiriesto do so.

If you are a Self Assessment customer, any repayment due will be added to your Self Assessment statement as a credit.

If you would like to claim repayment of this credit, you can do so via your Personal Tax Account,

or by contacting Self Assessment via :

Thank you .
