I am a pensioner permanently leaving the UK for Portugal. I have dual UK/Portuguese nationality. I submitted a self-assessment form for 2024-25 in May 2025, when I also started the Portuguese government that I am becoming fiscally resident in Portugal. I now need to notify the UK government that I will be having my UK income - pensions and a small amount of bank interest - taxed in Portugal, and that I will no longer be tax resident in the UK. As I understand it this means I first need to complete a P85, which is raising some questions: 1. Date of moving country. When do I take this as being? The day I submitted my request to the Portuguese government to become resident in Portugal? The first day of the current tax year (2025-6) since my tax affairs in the UK are up to date for 2024-5? The day I arrived in Portugal to look into sorting all this out? 2. The section on income wants a tax reference for each pension, but I don't know where to find a tax reference for the state pension. They don't send me a P60, and there is no reference to one on the tax code notice. Where do I find this? Thanks

Hi marinheiro,
The P85 is not applicable to you.
You need to complete a double taxation claim form.
Please see here:
Tax on your UK income if you live abroad
Thank you.

Hi HMRCAdmin 25 Thank you for your reply. Everyone else we have talked to so far has told us we need to submit a P85, not to reclaim tax, but just to notify the UK govt. of our residence abroad. Can we take it that a reply from you telling us not to is an official response from HMRC, that if we have to we can quote in future? We will be submitting the form DT-Individual, but are waiting for acknowledgement from the Portuguese dept. of finance that we are now resident in Portugal, so that we can get it stamped. Thanks again

Hi,
The P85 would only notify us that you have left the UK.
This will not change your tax code for any UK income that you still receive.
The DT form is therefore required to ensure that you are not taxed in 2 countries on the same income.
Thank you.
