I am sending myself my personal effects as a phd student enrolled into a 4 year program. The shipping company I am using requires me to pay the customs charges in order to process the shipment and claims they cannot advance the charges on my behalf. I must either pay the duty fees or have my package returned to sender. Is it possible to get a refund for duties paid and how would I go about claiming a refund?

Hi,
You can claim for repayment if you moved to the UK to enrol at a school, academy, college or university to study on a full time basis. You can see guidance here:
How to claim a repayment of import duty and VAT if you've overpaid
Students moving to the UK for full-time study
Thank you.
