I am 64 years old and wish to claim a full state retirement pension when I retire. I am trying to find out: (1) how many years' (Voluntary) Class 3 National Insurance contributions I have to pay, and (2) How I can pay the amounts owing before the imminent deadline for payment. I have telephoned HMRC multiple times and submitted forms and letters in Sept 2024, but not received the info I so desperately need. I have tried to set up a Government Gateway Account but failed; although I am a full UK passport holder, I don't have a UK driver's license, post code, credit card or bank account. I have not lived in the UK since Aug 1990 and have lived in Hong Kong since Sept. 2001. Today, I downloaded the app to scan my face to prove my ID, but am told I have the wrong iPhone. What can I do? Time is running out!

Hi,
If you have already submitted a query to us then you will not be penalised by our delay and if we reply after the 5 April 2025 deadline then we will use the rates in force when we received your query and give you more time to pay any voluntary National Insurance contributions that you may wish to.
Thank you.

Hi, I am writing to you to inquire about a difficulty I am facing. HMRC cannot confirm my identity. Even though In their Govt. ID check app reads my Passport and shows my details. When it redirects to the website It says it cannot confirm my ID.

I am without doubt at my wits end. I am trying to pay my back taxes of several thousand pound which have accumilated due to a miss understanding of the rules. The figure has been calculated by a financial advisor and a dead line has been set. All I have to do is sign into a government gateway account (which I don't have) and arrange payment. Unfortunately my identity cannot be confirmed as I don't have a photo I'd driving licence or a passport and none of the other critia required. I rang the help desks and after a considerable time spoke to some one who could not help but past me on, he then passed me on who guess what passed me on to a lady who attempted to pass me on to payments who never answered the phone and eventually hung up on me as the line went dead. I'm told I am likely to face a fine for late payment, so I've opted to purchase a passport which I neither want or need. This could if successful give me one of the two forms of evidence required to acquire a government gateway account. I can think of no other business, organisation or individual that would require me to prove who I am to pay an amount of money to clear my debts, unless of course you know of a mystry benifactor willing to pay my arrears. In the event this is read by someone who can help and by that I mean not to refer me to the government website or telephone help line I would like to make my first payment and discuss the further payments you are requesting.

Hi there, I would like to ask if is there a person to person way to verify my identity, I tried to do it several times with the Gov app but it doesn't work. Everything is going okay within the app but when redirected to the HMRC site, they are unable to verify that is me. All my documents are up to date. EU passport, EU Citizenship card, EU full driving licence and I have an updated UKVI account. If someone please, can help me with with this I appreciate. Thank you

Hi, I have tried to set up my online personal tax account for years. I get the following error message. The information you gave does not match our records This means that some or all of the details you entered were incorrect. I have contacted the Digital Customer Support Team several times and went through rounds of the same: showing the screenshot proving that I actually entered my data correctly, the receiving the following reply. Thank you for your reply. I am sorry for the problems you are experiencing. We have identified a discrepancy which is preventing you from proceeding. Please be assured, this is nothing to do with your data but rather it is how our systems communicate with each other. Once the discrepancy has been rectified you will be notified. Unfortunately it can take up to 8 weeks however I will keep you informed. Later I get another reply saying that the problem is now fixed and I should make sure I clear the cookies, restart the browser and then try again, but the problem just persists. Is there any way in which I can get help to get this sorted please? It is getting increasingly difficult to not have an online tax account. Many thanks for advice!

I'm a UK citizen living in the US. I'm having trouble verifying my identity on Gov. Gateway even though I have a valid UK passport and a National Insurance Number. Because I moved to the UK as a young adult, I don't have a UK credit history, post code, or photo license (although I do have a previous address). I worked and pay taxes in the UK for short stints on and off in the 1990s while was studying in the US. How can I verify my identity?
