How long do “security checks” for tax refunds typically take? Our refund was apparently paid 12 working days ago now we are being told to wait another 10 working days which is highly unacceptable given we are in the middle of a cost of living crisis. Can’t help but feel like we’re being lied to and fobbed off.

Hi,

If the refund has been issued, this would normally be received within 10 working days.

If the repayment has been requested but stopped for additional checks, we aim to clear these within 6 weeks.

Thank you.

So as this was “paid” 3 weeks ago yesterday I should expect to see it in the bank within the next 3 weeks?

Hi,

If a repayment was issued by BACS and you have not received it after 10 working days,

you should contact our helpline to check where it has been issued to.

Thank you.

I have and have been told it’s going through security checks. They said 10 days you guys have said 6 weeks so my question is, is this 6 weeks from the date it was marked as “paid” on the tax account? The whole process is an absolute joke, keeping peoples money from them when everybody is struggling.

Hi,

It would not be 6 weeks from the date paid, it would be 6 weeks when marked as 'pending'.

Once it has been paid it would be within 10 working days.

Thank you.

Hi I have a similar problem. Payments issued 14 December 2022 Was told to wait 10 days And now today is the time scale I’ve been given of 6 weeks has passed so made the call apparently use have made checks of what was needed and I was told this so an email has been sent to Payment officer as to why it’s still not paid and now I’m waiting an additional 10 days Why is this ? As it’s still pending repayment thanks

We are still waiting for our refund. It has been almost 16 months now and we are still waiting for the £11000 owed to us. We will be getting our local MP involved if no updates by next month and if that doesn’t work we will be seeking legal advice.

Hi Carl,

If we have sent an email regarding a pending repayment we need to allow time for a response.

Thank you.

Hi Carl Brown

We would not be able to provide a timescale without looking at your record, as there are different timescales for departments within HMRC.

Thank you.
