Why are my security checks gonna take until 19th June? That will be over 2 months of waiting for repayment.

What security checks are done? Is it identity checks? Or checking all the details and figures in the tax return? Or both?

So this is the first time Iv had subject to “additional checks” sent me return on the 6th of April didn’t hear anything until the 25th and there was a genuine error that got picked up not from me but the accounting firm the company that pays me uses, managed to resolve the issue over the phone with quite a helpful agent to be honest at least I thought he told me it’s all done now re submitted and should he without a few days it’s now the 18th of may and Iv been told today by somebody on the phone (that asked me for my sort code as proof of identity) that it’s now been randomly selected for payment security checks how on earth can you need more payment security than all the details you have of mine and then being asked in that very conversation to confirm part of the bank details that the money is being paid into this is an absolute joke if it were the other way round this would not be ok

I would strongly urge everyone to contact their local MP and ask them to step in on these ridiculous tax rebate delays. We have been waiting 19 months now for a 5 figure tax rebate. 18 of those months my husband has been unable to work due to a cancer diagnosis. He has had to return to work even though he is still receiving chemotherapy as we need the money. 5 complaints to HMRC via phone/online/recorded delivery letter and not a single response from them. Nobody returns our calls and each time we get told a different story about where OUR money is. Our MP has confirmed they are now investigating, I will take this all the way to the ombudsman if I need to, I urge everybody to do the same. There a cost of living crisis and they are taking our money and refusing to return it, something needs to change.

On 24.04.23 you said you got technical issue and the security check not made yet so you need another 30 days. Then on 24.05.23 you said the security check not over yet you need another 6-8 weeks. this will be the 4th tax return 'security checks' that i have had in a row. (baring in mind each time i have been paid in FULL for the repayment request) its also meant to be 'random' but here we are 4 years later - going through the same thing AGAIN. Filled my tax return on 11th May (due to the fact they locked me out of my account, i had to wait 2-3 weeks to be able to log in whilst they passed it to another 'department' so finally when i managed to get in submitted it. I have rang today to see where my money is and apparently its going through 'security check' AGAIN, surprise surprise. I have now made a complaint and have also wrote to my local MP so that this can be investigated and looked into. Its not fair playing with peoples money - imagine if we turned around and advised we need a further 6-8 weeks. WOULDN'T be possible would it? its a joke. what is really going on?

Hi I put my refund in on the 20th april and still says payment pending. Everytime i phone up they email a referral and still not had a response back. Thats 7 weeks its said pending! What next? Will it just appear in my account? Im not working due to transport reasons and mental health situation because of this! Where can we put a complaint in or do we use our local mp? I think the government is just holding onto it now because their skint. System is a joke unfit for purpose!

Unfortunately, there is no direct contact for that department.

Thank you.

Contacted HMRC regarding my tax return & was informed it has now been processed & payment will be issued. No payment received. Contacted HMRC once again to be told checks are being done. Our local MP has confirmed he will be investigating the issue.

Hi Paul Mckinnon,
Some repayments are selected for additional security checks.
The current timescale for security checks to be completed is 10 weeks.
Thank you.

I’m waiting for a year 2022/23 tax refund. My accountant completed all relevant forms and I have all documents including stamped seafarers book with days out of country on ships proving my status as non resident. Firstly why is my account showing payment pending? Secondly why was I informed a decision would be made on 17th July to release payment or further security checks, yet I have called today and been told there has been no checks or update!?!?!,
