I left the UK several years ago and for the tax year 2020/21 I spent 0 days in the UK, and was therefore not a tax resident. As such I did not fill out a self assessment form for that year and received a message informing me it was due. In March 2022 I submitted a 'request for removal from Self Assessment' (ref: SVB-0C9V-UTR) to prevent this escalating further. The progress tracker has an estimated completion of this form as April 2022. I recently received a message telling me I must pay a penalty of £1200 because I had not submitted my self assessment form. I only have 30 days to appeal this which seems unfair as I submitted my removal request several months ago. Can you please advise how best to proceed?
