Hi, I would like to ask, how could I pay for Class 2 National Insurance for the tax years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022? I was fully employed for 15 years and the last 2 years I was self employed but with low income. Online self assessment tax return didn't give me the option to fill voluntary NI class2 contribution. I have already submitted self assessment tax return for year 2021-2022. Thank you for advice. Kind regards, Tibor Stach

In the same vein but slightly different, in that I ticked the box to say I want to pay class 2 NIC voluntarily as 21-22 is the 1st year I'm in self employment with low profits. I have yet to submit the return. However, the page wouldn't save as it returned the error message saying "As Class 2 NIC amount is not available or zero, select 'No' to 'Do you want to pay Class 2 NIC voluntarily?' How do I proceed WITH wanting to pay class 2 NIC voluntarily? Thanks

Hi notax4mepls,

If your Self Assessment tax return will not allow you to voluntarily pay class 2 NIC, then it would appear that you are not yet registered as self-employed.

You will need to contact 0300 200 3500 (Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm Closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays), so that Self Assessment can be updated.

This helpline will also help you make any voluntary class 2 NIC payments.

You can also pay online here:
