Hi I have by mistake requested a higher charge benefit self assessment for the year 20/21 but i realised that I earned more in this financial year 21/22 and therefore asked for the self assessment to be removed. I never received any response back from HMRC and called few times and was told I don't need to pay. I received a letter today saying I need to pay £100 penalty but I have asked to be removed. I don't understand I only wanted to do the right thing and yet again being penalised. Any help please?

If you were told you didnt need to pay I would expect my colleague has cancelled the request for the return,
however I would advise to contact again as I cant be sure without viewing your record.
