I sent my request for payment for my tax refund on 6 Feb. The confirmation states HMRC aim to issue repayment in 2 weeks. It is now 4 weeks since the submission request. When will I receive the payment?

Hi FeeB,

Some repayments can be stopped for additional security checks and we aim to clear those within 6 weeks where possible, please contact us if you have not received anything within 6 weeks.

Same with me. I completed a self assessment refund online since Nov last year, after checking my account few days later the money was still showing in my account as if it was never requested. I have requested severally since and same thing happened. Unable to get through to anyone at hmrc. Could someone explain to me what is going on please

I completed my tax return last July and requested a refund. Nothing - I then thought that they weren't issued until after 31 Jan so I waited and claimed again in Feb. Still waiting and can't get through on the phone - get cut off every time.

Hi Sweetangel,

If the refund hasn't been issued there may be something stopping this happening. You will need to try our Self Assessment team again or write to us.

Hi Nikki Craske,

If you have an online account, you can view if there is a repayment available.
If you are unable to request the refund online you will need to contact our helpline again.

I've submitted mine probably 10 times, beginning in early November. I get the same "payment within 2 weeks" message each time, and then nothing happens.

Calling isn't an option that works, so I suppose we need to write a letter?

If you are unable to contact us by telephone then you will need to write a letter.

Thank you.

I finally spoke to HMRC last week. I did have to hold for 45 minutes but spoke to someone. I needed to answer some 'security' questions for the refund to be released. It does seem odd that HMRC require this, and the HMRC person did say there was a glitch in the system!! However, all done and refund came through within 5 days.

I'm on my 4th try on contacting Hmrc via phone regarding the refund. After 6 weeks have passed waiting 1 hour every time one calls you so you can just hang up, well worth our tax.It seems that the only option is MP and Ombudsman because it seems that Hmrc is going broke!

Hi Bogdan O
If a repayment is selected for additional security checks, we try to clear within 6 weeks however it can take longer at peak times.
Thankyou.

I applied on 31st January for a self-assessment tax return. I received confirmation of receipt of this. I have had no further communications. I called HMRC 03002003600 and they said self-assessment line is closed until September. They said try the online chat - this only gave advice about filling in the return. They then gave me this number 03002003610 to call. This line explicitly said they could not help with self-assessment. I then tried 0300 200 3310 who said they are closed and to try the online portal. It's now over 4 months since I submitted the form. Wo can I speak to directly about this? This cannot be right.

Sent my self assessment off 6th April, but has been selected for ‘security checks’ Was told it would be paid to me within 6 weeks but still haven’t heard anything. Get cut off on the phone every time I’ve tried calling. And now they have closed the phone line. App is absolutely useless. How is it okay for HMRC to withhold money, without any prior warning etc. and absolutely no conversation or letters with what is happening. £18k is a lot to be holding from a sole trader, the impact it is having on my business is excessive. Surely we should be able to add interest like it would be if it was the other way around.

I have tried requesting a refund for overpaid tax three times using the HMRC request a refund for self assessment. Each time it has accepted the request and said I should receive the refund in 10 working days. Every time no refund is paid to me, I go back and request again, same thing, nothing happens! I have received no emails or any phone call to say there is any issue with making the payment into my account, why is this not being paid? Now they are saying the phone line to deal with these queries is closed until September, can we request that lost interest is paid to us on top of the actual refund?
