Hi msea,

The official turnaround for these payments is 26 weeks, although in practice, they are usually worked quicker.

If you call the National Insurance helpline they will be able to confirm receipt and allocate the payment straight away.

National Insurance: general enquiries

Thank you.

Hi all. I paid a large (well in excess of £5000) to HMRC for bacdated class 3 NI contributions on the 1st November 2022. I expected a long delay but I checked my pension forcast on the 23rd November to find it had all been updated with my contributions. 23 day, thank you and well done HMRC.

Hello I would like to ask about online payment of NI gaps. On the online hmrc account it shows the gaps and that I can pay 190.20 but there is no payment button. I can only go to the payment button and pay something online to hmrc but then it doesn’t say what I’m paying for. How will hmrc allocate that the payment was for the 2012 NI gap?

Hi. I made a considerable payment for gap years on 16th November 2022. My pension start date was 5th January 2023. The payments I made for the missing years are still not showing up. I phoned HMRC 2 weeks ago, they confirmed receipt of the payment but why are they not showing? Thank you

Hi Veronika Coufalova,

When you contact us, prior to making a voluntary payment, for the 18 digit reference number required to make online payments, we would have noted our records which tax year you are paying for so we know where to allocate the payment when we receive it.

Thank you.

Hi Thomas aird anderson
Due to recent publicity surrounding the option of making a voluntary payment to boost pension entitlement, we are receiving an extremely high volume of these payments.
Each payment needs to be applied to the correct years manually, the team who deal with this work are currently working on payments received on 20/9/22.
However when you called, the advisor you spoke to should have allocated the payment to the correct years at the time of the call.
This will then send an automatic prompt to the DWP to advise them that there has been a change to your NI record and your pension needs to be recalculated.
HMRC have no control over how quickly these recalculations are done.
If you have still not received an increase in your pension there are two possible reasons –
1)    The payment has not been correctly allocated by HMRC
2)    The prompt to recalculate has gone to DWP but they have not yet dealt with it.
I would suggest you call the NI Helpline on 0300 200 3500 to ascertain if the payment has been allocated correctly.
If it has, you would then need to speak to the Pension Services on 0800 731 0469 to see when they will recalculate your entitlement based on the payment of additional years.
Thankyou.
Regards.

Each payment needs to be applied to the correct years manually, the team who deal with this work are currently working on payments received on 20/9/22, so if you made your payment at the start of September, it will only have been allocated fairly recently.

HMRC have no control over how quickly these recalculations are done.

I just checked my NI record online. I paid voluntary class 2 NI via my Self Assessment tax returns. I ticked the option on the tax form to pay the NI. for each year 2019/20, 2020/21, and the NI was included in the tax return and paid. And I have just done the same for 2021/22. But when I check my NI record for the tax years 2019/20, 2020/21 , 2021/22 it says "Year is not full.We are checking this year to see if it counts towards your pension. We’ll update your record when this is finished, you do not need to do anything" While I can understand it being too soon for 2021/22 to be credited, I was surprised to see that the previous years had not been updated.

Hi rionia,

If you paid the voluntary Class 2 NICs correctly via SA they should be on their NI record.
You will have to contact the NI helpline directly as I am unable to check specific customer records only give general advise.
You can call the NI Helpline on 0300 200 3500 (Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm. Closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays).

Thank you.

Myself and a friend have both applied to pay voluntary class 2 contributions as we work abroad and neither of us have had any reply. The online form just says being processed and has done since November 10th 2022. The deadline for us is coming up and still we have heard nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

Re HMRC Admin25 Hello I have just gone online to check whether my application for Voluntary class 2 contributions has been successful. Whereas before it said in progress. Now my application is not there and I have heard nothing as to whether or not it has been successful or not. I have given various ways to contact myself and have heard nothing. Will I be receiving something in the post or some kind of confirmation as to whether my application was successful or not so that I will be able to go ahead and make the contributions.

Hi,
We can confirm that you will receive a reply to your CF83 application in writing. Without checking your personal records, I am unable to confirm when your application was received, however I can give you the current timescales for the area who will be processing your application.
If you live in an EU country the current timescale is 32 weeks (applications received on 4 October 2022 are currently being processed). If you live in a non-EU country, the current timescale is 39 weeks (applications received on 16 August 2022 are currently being processed).
Thank you
