I got two £100 penalties for 2018 and 2019. I spoke to the HMRC earlier regarding this case, and I had both penalties cancelled in July 2021. It was a lenghty call at that time, and we went through all the conditions, and the officer checked that I didn't need to file a self assesment (No other income, below the child benefit threshold etc, etc...) Now, I opened my account this year, and I see penalties again, for the same years - but this time each for £300! I didn't get any letters from HMRC in the meantime, or phonecalls or anything regarding the issue. It is frustrating and it seems there's a glitch in the system, that keeps applying penalties automatically. I'm afraid that I will get them cancelled eventually, but next year they will pop up again. How to get this fixed permanently, so I don't get penalties again?? I sent a letter and didn't get a response, also spoke to an officer on the phone, and he said that I should simply wait, but it jut doesn't seem right. I hope that someone can help with it.

Hi,

You should contact our Self Assessment team again, if we cancelled the penalties after your first call then the Self Assessment returns should have been cancelled if you did not meet the criteria.

What is the best phone number to call in this case? Or should I send the letter instead? I called but I didn't get help. Everyone that I spoke to seems to think that it's impossible - thus I was advised to wait and see what happens. Thanks, M

I appealed the penalties, and I explained everything in the form. The form said that I cannot appeal the penalty which higher than £100, but it actually was £100, which somehow grew up to £900, without me getting any communication from HMRC. I hope for a positive outcome. My reference number is [ ref removed by admin] Kind regards, Michal
