I'm a higher rate tax payer 40% and have exceed the £40k Annual Allaowance input amount. How do i declare this on Self Assessment? My pension contribution are taken from my gross salary, CAn I use previous years allowance? Do HMRC automatcially do this?

Yes, you can use any unused allowances from previous years and if you have enough that there is no pension tax charge, you do not need to declare this on your tax return.
