Is savings interest declared on self assessment return when it is paid, or added to an account, ie a later tax year even though interest on said account is accrued daily? Regards

perhaps I have caused confusion in my original post. To be clear, I have earned more than £10k in savings interest hence the need for a self assessment 24-25. My query which building societies are unable to answer is simply; when interest is credited to my savings account annually, in this case June 2025, does this mean I don't have to declare interest from said account in my 24 to 25 self assessment even though interest is accrued daily from when the account was opened in June 24. I hope this is clearer. I have read the previous replies, .gov section does not answer my query. Many thanks

If the interest is only credited once a year then thats when it goes on the return...credited in June 2025, goes on 25/26. If it had been credited monthly it would the total to 5 April 2025 on 24/25 and 6 April 2025 to June 25 on 25/26. Any account that pays once a year its the payment date that dictates the tax year. The interest may have accrued in the previous year but it was never credited so it didnt actually exist until it "appeared"

Hi ,

If the interest is not received until June 2025, then this would be declared in your 2025/2026 Tax Return
and not the 2024/2025 Tax Return.

Thank you .
