I'm completing my 2021-2022 tax return. In the 'Underpaid tax' section it says: 'Amount of underpaid tax for earlier years included in your tax code for 6 April 2021 to 5 April 2022 (from your PAYE Notice of Coding): £ 0.00 Is this figure correct?' I can't find any Notices of Coding anywhere in my personal account, and I've not received any by post. So how do I check them please?

Hi,

On the PAYE section of the online account, if available you can 'check previous tax years' and under 2021/22
there should be an option for 'tax code at end of the year' .

Thank you.

Hi, Yes I've found this, but it only gives the tax code, it doesn't show any underpaid tax that would be shown in the notice of coding. There are several sections that imply that you should check the notice of coding, So where is it? Thanks

Hi
The Personal Tax Account will not give a full breakdown of the code.
If your code is different to the standard 1257L code you would need to query this with our Income Tax department.

Thankyou.

OK, so I can't answer the question 'Amount of underpaid tax for earlier years included in your tax code for 6 April 2021 to 5 April 2022 (from your PAYE Notice of Coding): £ 0.00 Is this figure correct?' . I'll just have to assume it is.

I don't know if this is too late for you, but it may help others. I searched for ages and managed to find my PAYE coding notices in my personal account. I don't know why they don't come up when you click on the PAYE section and I think the help they give on here sounds like it comes from a robot as none of the questions asked are answered satisfactorily. This has worked for me: sign into your personal tax account www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account once signed in (account home) select Business tax account from the bar at the top under self assessment there is an option to "view payments and credits, select this the option to "view PAYE coding notices" should be in the right hand menu, select this you can chose which date you want to review I hope this helps and works for you. I don't know why they've made them so difficult to find.

Hi JasonTax, Thanks, too late for this year but should be useful in the future and to others. Agreed it's ridiculously well hidden, and why couldn't HMRC answer a simple question?

A massive thank you to @JasonTax for pointing out the completely illogical place where PAYE coding notices can be accessed. @HMRC why aren't these made obvious in the main PAYE tax account instead?

Even with JasonTax's great explanation, I still can't see my PAYE coding notices... This is the explanation I got: You may not be able to view your PAYE Coding Notices if either of the following apply: you or your agent were not registered for Self Assessment Online when the Coding Notice was issued no PAYE Coding Notices have been issued since 10 October 2011 In this case, what am I supposed to do with the queastions about the amount of underpaid tax for earlier years included in my tax code for 2021-2022?

Hi,

You will need to contact our Income Tax team who can confirm the breakdown of your tax code.

Thank you.

Thank you JasonTax. Your tip helped remind me where these documents are filed. It could be a lot easier to find them if the HMRC team wanted to make this service even better.

I didn't understand the 'Amount of underpaid tax for earlier years included in your tax code for 6 April 2021 to 5 April 2022 (from your PAYE Notice of Coding)' question on my Self Assessment either and I've spent hours searching for my PAYE Notice of Coding. I have the same problem as JB2022 - it's not available online and I don't think the reasons given apply to me. This thread has been running for months - please can HMRC make it easier to find the requisite Notice of Coding. I spent ages on the phone to them today and confirmed that I am digital only and should be able to access it - but I can't!

Hi BikerJane R
Online you will only be able to view what the code was and not a full breakdown.
You can submit feedback on the Personal Tax Account and this will be passed to the team who collate feedback and pass this on.
Thankyou.
Regards.

JasonTax You answered my query ‘where is my P2 Notice of Coding located on my online portal?’ – thank you very much as I spent a long time clicking links before I came across your answer.

Thanks Customer33 and JasonTax I too have been trying find my Tax Code notifications online and JasonTax's answer is the right answer. It is not an obvious place, it would help if HMRC put the same link on the PAYE section of the Account Home Page

I have created an account just to say 'Thank you' to JasonTax for helping me find my Tax Code Notice online. I have been looking for days and would never have found it without this!

Just posting to say thank you to JasonTax - I was going crazy trying to find the coding notices, as I knew I'd seen them somewhere before! It's ridiculous how hidden they are. Cheers.

Hi,

When you are in the Personal Tax Account  and access the PAYE section there is an option for Check Next Tax Year and there will be a section for Tax codes if we have generated a new code.

Thank you.
