Hello. I’ve just completed the dividend page of my online self assessment. After entering UK divis, I entered the figures for a tiny foreign dividend I’ve received, and I got a warning message at the top of the page in large bolded red font saying: “WARNING: Make sure you have entered the correct amount of foreign dividends.” Against the entry it warned again in red: “WARNING: Please check and amend the entry below.” The foreign divi was from a leftover holding in Santander and just £30.34 after £4.16 withholding tax. Don’t think I’ve got anything wrong, so was a bit puzzled. It hasn’t stopped me proceeding to the assessment, so is it just a glitch to keep us on our toes and to be ignored? Thanks.

I've just found a discussion by accountants on AccountingWeb, started by an accountant who has had the same warning in another section without any apparent reason or explanation. The consensus was to just ignore it. Ordinary taxpayers, like me, are now expected to use the online tax return site. If professionals can't make sense of messages generated there, then there's not much hope for the rest of us, and it's not fit for purpose. I can't get to speak to anyone by phone, so I'll do the same as the pros and ignore any messages. All a bit rum.

Hi,

This is just an advisory message. You can save and continue to finish your return.

Thank you.
