I have recently tried to reclaim a repayment of overpaid tax on 13 March 25 through the website, which seemed as though it was going to be very quick and easy. Simply enter the amount you want repaying and the bank account details you want it repaying into. What a process this has ended up being! I didn't hear anything from HMRC for 8 weeks. In the meantime I was checking the HMRC Government Gateway website to see when it was appropriate to check up on my repayment request and it gave a timeline of 8 May 25 before i should enquire further. 8th of May arrives and still nothing. I spoke with the computerised chat and it suggested that I should reach out to a virtual agent. I then reached out to a virtual agent and they inform me that the ONLY way to request a repayment is by writing a letter requesting repayment to PAYE & Self Assessment, HMRC, BX91AS. No template was provided for this request. I have now sent what I believe to be a formal request for repayment, not knowing when or how I will hear back from HMRC with respect to getting the money I am owed repaid to me. I have no idea of the timelines for repayment and am now operating in further communication darkness. 1) Can I kindly ask that this process be further explained to me to help provide some reassurance that I have following the correct procedure. 2) Can I kindly ask that if this mailbox approach is now the only method to communicate a self assessment repayment request, that this process be broadcast clearly on the HMRC website so that months are not wasted trying to use the other telephone, virtual assistance or digital requesting system. Feeling quite frustrated by all this and the length of time it takes to follow the perceived due process. Many thanks for your response in advance.
