Hello, Does a PAYE employee who has incurred an expense for a professional subscription related to their role, but has been fully reimbursed by their employer, need to include that expense on a self assessment return (the tax return is being completed for unrelated reasons)? Does the expense need to be listed on the P11D? Thank you.

Hi,

If declared on the P11D then the employee would need to claim relief on the Self Assessment to offset this.

Hi, If a professional subscription related to an employee's role has been fully reimbursed directly (outside of the monthly pay roll), does that need to be shared on the self-assessment tax return under the "expenses" section? Please note the employer does not issue P11D so a bit confused at how this should be treated. Thank you

Yes it should be declared and if the subscription relates to your job and is on the HMRC approved list you can claim relif on this to offset.

Hi. I'm not sure I understand the above. I have already been fully reimbursed by my employer, so I don't think I should be getting any relief for this - can you please clarify? Thank you.

Hi orgndy-slog-0k,
On your Self Assessment tax return you would declare the professional subscription as being reimbursed as a taxable benefit then if the subscription is related to your job and is on the approved list you would then claim relief in the expenses section on the employment page to offset.

I pay my approved professional subscription personally and I am am not reimbursed by my emplyer. How do I claim tax relief?

Hi,
If you do not complete a self assessment tax return you can claim tax relief by completing form P87 and returning this to us by post along with evidence of the professional subscription payment you have made for all years you are claiming for.

In case useful to Peter, you can claim professional expenses in the online self-assessment by ticking 'yes' at the following question located in the employment section: Do you wish to claim any employment expenses or capital allowances while working for xx limited [company you are employed by]. That will make the box 'Professional fees and subscriptions' appear.
