I cannot verify my identity to file my self assessment. This is my first time. I am an American citizen in the UK and need to file and pay ASAP like many others. I don’t have the identity documents required. Why was the old verification method abandoned without a plan to put in its place? Do we have to use pen and paper and send a paper cheque? The deadline for that has passed so now I’ll be penalised with a fine? This needs to be sorted ASAP for the thousands of people who can no longer use the online method of filing returns and looking at our credits and tax records. Advise what we should do in this instance please.

Hi,

You are correct, if you are unable to verify with the Government Gateway you will need to file a paper tax return.

If you send the return within 3 months of the 31/10/2022 deadline you will receive a £100 penalty.

If submitting after that they penalties will increase.

If you wish to make an appeal against the penalty you will receive information regarding doing this on the penalty notice.

Thank you.
