I am owed a lot of money by HMRC for tax year 22-23. I submitted self assessment in July and waited till November and called them twice. Then in Dec 23 I submitted a online request for refund with my account details ( which I had provided on my tax return). The amount is not large enough to require extra security checks but large for me. I called again in Jan 24 and passed all security questions and spoke to someone who said he will sort it and in 2 weeks I should receive it. Now it is March and it still shows pending. This is unacceptable. from Jan 31st they owe me interest too for delayed payment as per the person on phone. I can't submit another request for refund either...Hope they get their act together.

Hello, I received the Self Assessment: Late tax return Notice of penalty assessment for April 2022- April 2023 period. But I started to work in UK in August 2023. Due to my working set up being International Commuter, I do not have a UK National Insurance Number and this is not a requirement , as My company pay all taxes accrued from my work carried out in the UK. Could you please help me with appeal the penalty letter. I can't do it online because I don't have the NINO.

I submitted a refund on the 1st of January 2024 because I am in credit, heard nothing for weeks, so I called hmrc on the 1st of febuary to chase up the payment, after about 30 minutes of near silence and “security checks” I was told i would be now contacted by letter and hung up on. Its is now march the 11th, and I still havent heard anything from hmrc regarding my refund, or when I will receive it. Absolutely poor experience as usual, now whenever I try to contact hmrc again to further chase up my refund, I cant even get past the robot on the phone, who just sends me a link to an unhelpful, useless information page. Absolutely ridiculous.

I tried to put a tax return in April 2023 to find my account was closed which after numerous phone calls was reopened January 2024 which I was then told to send my tax return online and still have not received it! I understand HMRC are busy but people depend on this money and seeming the taxman takes a big chuck of your wages for doing nothing I think the least he could do was give us our rebate on time! I've spent hours on the phone to them and no one seems to have a clue about anything so it is very worrying to be honest! Does HMRC have a deadline to pay people there refunds like we have deadlines to pay out taxes??

Hi,
You will need to review the tax treaty between the UK and Hong Kong at:
Hong Kong: tax treaties, to determine whether your sources of income are taxable in Hong Kong or UK or both countries.
Where your overseas income is taxable in the UK,  you will need to submit a self assessment tax return and where tax is payable overseas on that income, you can claim a foreign tax credit.
Thank you.

I am owed quite a substantial repayment. I requested it back in January but was told it needed to be done over the phone. I called again in February and was told it would be 2 weeks. I called again today (took me over an hour to get through) and was told it would be May because of security checks. May!!!!! And it will be accruing interest in that time paid by other tax payers - that interest doesn’t come from a money tree. Crazy, inefficient system.

I will also be raising this with my MP

If you submitted your tax return online and a repayment of tax is due, you can log into your personal tax account and claim a repayment into your bank account, by adding your bank details.
Alternatively, you can contact our Self Assessment helpline to arrange for your repayment to be sent to your bank account.

As per HMRC guidelines I logged into my personal tax account and could see under the "current position" that I could request a £1827.55 repayment, which I did back on 15 February 2024, which I believe was successfully summitted as the system provided me with a summary of the request and a reference ID. The summary stated I should receive the refund within 2 weeks, or 4 weeks during busy times. However, I have yet to hear anything from HMRC, and the "current position" remains unchanged from when I made the request. HMRC any chance you could look into this for me please, the reference ID is REPO2FCVCSL5, or if not, let me know if there are currently long delays and when I should expect repayment ? Thanks.

Hi all My repayment of £3826 in pending status since June 2023. Have been on phone numerous times and have been told someone will contact me and it will be sorted but nothing. In January 2024 I had to make an amendment. After that it showed up as £2767 pending for repayment and £1059 to be reclaimed back from me. Called up again and been assured everything will be sorted. Now received letter asking to pay £1059 and that the interest is running on the amount. Have been on phone for 1h 16min cuts off with we are not able to answer your call. So repayment still pending and all the figures messed up. Any advice?

Hello HMRC. I posted my return online on 7th December 2023. I'm due a repayment that has therefore been pending for over 5 months. Extra security surely cannot still be being completed. I can't access any useful information online or by phone. Please could you let me know how I can find out more?
