I moved to the UK from Hong Kong with my family on 29/7/2021 after successfully rented a house in the UK. Having settled down with my family, I returned Hong Kong on 17/8/2021 to continue my work contract with my employer until 18/9/2021. Then I was on my final leave and received the allowance monthly until February 2022. I then finished my tax clearance in Hong Kong and returned to the UK in September 2021. Do I need to count the income from this period to report in UK tax return?

Hi MK285,

If you qualify for split year, then you only report any foreign income for the UK part of the year.

You can find guidance here:

Residence, Domicile and Remittance Basis Manual

If you do not qualify then you will need to report all your foreign income to the UK.

Tax on foreign income

Guidance at at RDRM12150 www.gov.uk will help you work out if split year treatment applies.

You can find the link here:

RDRM12150 - Residence: The SRT: Split year treatment: Case 4: Starting to have a home in the UK

Thank you.
