Hi there, I’ve just received a letter from HMRC mentioning that I would have to complete the self-assessment form for the tax year from 6th April 2020 to 5th April 2021. My question is: I have only arrived and immigrated to the United Kingdom on 11th September 2021. Before my arrival, I’ve no UK-sourced income and not even working for a United Kingdom registered company at all. With no affiliation to the UK, would I need to report any of the income generated back then? As I believe the UK tax system shall not be charging me any tax from the income before my physical arrival date. Could I know more about that? Thank you.

On the basis of the info you have provided, you would only have to declare to HMRC your worldwide income from 11/9/2021 onwards.

As you were not resident in the UK in the 200/21 tax year, and had no UK-based income in that year, you do not have to complete a 2021 tax return.

Thank you.
