Hi, I am immigration to UK from HK and now preparing how to fill my first self-assessment tax return on coming tax year 2022-23 but I am have queries would like to ask: As I have no work in UK this moment. My only income is I am receiving an amount of dividends chargeable gains monthly from my foreign policy . However the total income is less than GBP12,000 during the tax year 2022-23 . Do I need to submit a self-assessment? Thank you. If yes, when I registering the self assessment account, should I choose "self-employed or a sole trader" or "not self-employed"? Thanks to advise.

Hi,

On the basis that you have  received income from outside the UK since arriving in the UK, during the 2022-23 tax year, you should complete a 2023 Self Assessment tax return.
Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return

Thank you.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. So, when I registering the self assessment account, should I choose "self-employed or a sole trader" or "not self-employed"? Because I am confusing as I am not refer to self-employed but I am unemployed too. Thanks to advise.

By the way, for the year end of the chargeable gains total is under £10,000 then do still need to complete the return? Thanks.

Hi Milk123,

You need to register for self assessment as not self employed because you are not self employed (sole trader).
You are in receipt of foreign income and this is criteria for completing a self assessment tax returm, regardless of how much foreign income you receive.

Thank you.
