I have been a UK citizen and resident all my adult life. I moved to the United Arab Emirates in Tax year 2021 - 2022 and started working in January 2022 - I have been in the same job since and will be for the next few years. My Self assessment is late ( I have a penalty) - that is not my question. Do I need to pay tax on my earnings from January to April in the UAE? I thought I only paid for the UK prt but worried this may not be the case. Can anyone advise?

Hi,

If you qualify for split year then you only report any foreign income for the UK part of the year

RDRM12000 - Residence: The SRT: Split year treatment

If you do not qualify then you will need to report all your foreign income to the UK

Tax on foreign income

The guidance at RDRM12150 at GOV.UK will help you work out if split year treatment applies.

Thank you.

Thank You - Split year does apply - i don't have to pay tax on my UAE income from January 2nd 2022 to April 2022. I have paid tax on UK income from April 2021 until 2023. I have sent a paper return to UK which I can see was received on March 3rd 2023 but have not received a calculation yet. How long does this take? it has been nearly 8 weeks so far. It cost 3.50 a minute to phone so that is not an option to speak to someone?

Hi,

We are unable to provide a timescale for processing your return. Our post is dealt with in date order and there is a backlog at present.

Thank you.
