I am submitting my self assessment (24/25) and I am calculated to have the standard £179.40 class 2 NIC (all normal as per previous years, meet all relevant criteria and am not paying voluntarily). Works it out correctly on the NI page. However, when I get to the 'view my calculation page' the £179.40 isn't carrying through. I didn't submit, and left it a week or so and came back today to see if was a one off - still doing the same thing. Checked with a family member who also files on self assessment, his submission has done the same thing, and received a refund £179.40 higher than he should have done. He hadn't realised, so now has to somehow pay HMRC the £179.40 back. I think there is a glitch? Please advise.

Hi ,

Your self assessment record is not currently set up for self employment, in respect of nation insurance.

You will need to contact the contribution agency at 0300 200 3500 (Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm Closed on Saturdays,
Sundays and Bank Holidays).

You can make a voluntary payment to them for your class 2 NIC for 2025 to 2025.

They can also update your self assessment record to include NIC, so that it can be collected along with your tax each year going forward.

Thank you .

Hi This unfortunately isn't correct - have now checked and 3 people all have had same issue when looked into it - been consistently paying class 2 NIC for previous years and nothing has changed. It is calculating £179.40 as due in the workings page, but then this figure is not pulling through into the 'view my calculation'. I hope I am wrong, but I do think this is a problem with the HMRC self assessment site. Thank you

Class 2 ni was abolished effective 24/25....it doesnt exist anymore, its treated as paid for all self employment above lower threshold...why dont HMRC know this? https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/autumn-statement-2023-national-insurance-factsheet/autumn-statement-2023-national-insurance-factsheet

thank you! Definitely a problem on HMRC side if they are still calculating it as due on the class 2 NIC page, even if they aren't adding it on at the end, very confusing for users!

Yes, confusing, I currently have an open post on the Agents forum about it...HMRC will issue a calculation saying the calculation has been amended for the Class 2 when the return goes in, but it wont have been and, like the calculation you can see, no ni is due...its because the SA system gets its ni figure from the DWP system, which is still showing the annual or partial figure for the year, and then the SA calculation also knows thats not payable, so it conflicts...but its not payable, no self employed person will pay auto calculated class 2 from 24/25
