Dear Sir/Madam, My mother moved to the UK last year and never has a UTR. She has to do a self-assessment for 2021/22. She had filled in a SA1 form and posted to HMRC in September. But she has not received any letter for the UTR yet. Should she try to do the register now, or should she keep waiting for the UTR? Thank you very much. Kind Regards.

Hi Agger05,

If she has not received a letter, she should contact our Self Assessment team who can check if a UTR has been generated:

Thank you.

Dear Sir/Madam, My mother has finally received a letter with her UTR. I tried to help her to register for online self-assessment. The first step was to register a Gateway account. There was a security check in the application process. As she did not have a NI no., I chose to answer her post code which I had tried two times but failed. I don't want to try again at the moment as there is a limited number of attempts. She did not register anything at HMRC before except for the post for UTR application, so I do not know why the postcode input was failed. But advise how to proceed forward if we want to register the online self-assessment service. Thank you very much. Kind Regards,

Hi,

Your mother will need to check with our Self Assessment team that the details you gave when trying to register online match our records held.
