I changed my name sometime in 2019, on all official documentations and even told HMRC through post about this. As I was a student and did not pay taxes i didn't need to access my account in those years after, however now everytime i try the document verification process (i.e the security check) before accessing my account fails because it accepts the first stages in that it accepts my old name and initial details but the problem is my documents are all in my new name and the document check fails. I have contacted all HMRC online chat, and online services helpline but they can't even begin to help me because I physically can't pass the security test!! HMRC have told me that all my records are updated and my name was always up to date but it's causing immeasurable problems right now because that simply can't be true or else it would have been let me access my account and pass the security test once I provide my correct documents. I am stuck at a deadend i feel like

Hi levi,
In this case as unable to update online or by calling or webchat you will need to submit a letter to HMRC confirming your details to update your record and then allow you to access your account.
The address to write to is:
HMRC, Self Assessment & PAYE,
BX9 1AS
UK
Thank you.

Hello, I need some advice regarding a name change issue with HMRC. A few months ago, I updated my name on the Government Gateway, and the change was reflected correctly there. For the sake of anonymity, my original name had the format ABC DEF HIJ, and my new name is KLM NOP. However, I recently received a letter from HMRC where my name is listed as KLM DEF NOP. This is incorrect, as "DEF" is not my middle name, it used to be a part of my first name. On the Government Gateway, when I try to initiate another change of name process, my name is correctly shown as KLM NOP with no middle name. It seems there might be a mix-up with HMRC's records. Can anyone offer advice on how to resolve this issue? I want to ensure that all future correspondence reflects my correct name. Thank you for any guidance!

Please I wish to confirm, what you mean by certifying document. I do not want to send my original passport or driving license but I can send the scammed copy. Can i scan a copy of my passport page and my Full UK license and send it across? I will need my original documents anytime and I can't risk sending it across when I do not know the exact date it will be received and returned. You are also aware of the frustration associated with calling HMRC. The call waiting time and the difficulty in getting connected to the customer service team is a nightmare that no human being would wish to experience.

I have been living in the UK for over 2 years. I am trying to verify my identity to get my Government Gateway ID, but my address results incorrect and I cannot complete the validation checks without it. I realised only now that my address on my payslips is incomplete (missing my flat number): I've contacted my employer and fixed it on their end, but I need to contact HMRC to notify them of the error in my details. The problem is, I cannot get through the phone verification since the address I provide is not correct, since I'm apparently registered to the wrong/incomplete address. How can I reach out to HMRC to get this sorted?

Hi, I’ve been trying to create an HMRC account for the past two years, but I keep getting stuck because the system is unable to verify my identity. Additionally, I recently received a tax-related letter at my old address in Italy, even though I’ve been living in London for the last two years. All other organizations have my correct London address, so I’m not sure why HMRC still has the old one on file. How can I resolve these issues and ensure my address is updated and my identity can be verified so I can create my account? Thanks for your help!

My D.O.B was wrong on the HMRC record. I send my passport and the relevant documents one month ago and no reply. This was recorded delivery and making me anxious of loosing all original documents. Is the a NR I can call to verify that those are with HMRC . Regards

Hi Charles,
It would need to be the original or certified document that you submit. The certified copy must be signed as a true copy and stamped with a date by a government department, legal organisation or a medical body for example in the UK  a solicitors office, doctor's surgery or the post office.
Thank you.

Hello. I have created an HMRC account, but I am having a problem to confirm my identity. I tried both available ways (scan face and documents in the ID check app, and enter details about details), both methods failed to confirm my identity. My name in my official documents (i.e. Passport, BRP, UK driving licence, and in the letter of the National insurance number) has 4 names. It is not specified to have first name or last name. However, my P60, two names are recorded as first name, and the forth name is recorded as last name, while it ignores my third name. When I start to confirm my identity in the HMRC website, I have to enter first and last names. I believe, this cause the confusion, and the system is not able to confirm my identity (comparing my HMRC records with my official document). I spoke many times with HMRC agents, but they told me that I can not solve this problem, I am still trying to figure out how to resolve this issue, as it has to be a way to fix it. Any suggestions?

Hi, is there an update on the wait time on the change of date of birth for national insurance? Sent off the birth certificate and received it back with a letter saying they’ve taken a copy and passed it on to the relevant department. Thanks

Hi catarina1694 ferreira,
I am sorry to hear that you have had issues registering for an account. You can update your address here - Tell HMRC when you change your address. However, to confirm why we cannot verify your identity, we may need to review your record.
Contact us by webchat or phone via: Self Assessment: general enquiries, where we can update your address too if necessary.
Thank you.
