I am self employed and pay for Medical, dental and life insurance cover personally. I have been told that I can claim these premiums through my self assessment, is this true?

Not HMRC..nope, no tax releif is due on any of that, they are personal choices and not directly related to being self employed, the fact that you need to be well, not have dental pain and want to be covered in the event of something happening to you to continue your work are "life choices" and any costs are therefore viewed as incidental...same as anyone under PAYE.

Hi Jason,
Only if these expenses were incurred wholly and exclusively for the purpose of your Self Employment occupation. As these expenses will most likely extend to covering private use, they would not usually be claimable.
Thank you.

...they arent likely extending to covering private use, they are personal life choice spending, in all cases The primary reason for this spending is to maintain health, maintain teeth and provide for others in the event of death. In no way is any of this spending remotely related to self employment.
