If you do not usually send a tax return, you can register for Self Assessment to declare any income you have not paid tax on from the last 4 years. You’ll need to fill in a separate tax return for each year. Can you confirm what this statement on your website means. Are there any penalties if I register and submit previous years tax returns?

Hi Ospreys,

If you have additional taxable income that you have not declared, yes you may be charged penalties/interest for not telling HMRC at the time.
A tax return will be required for each year you have the additional income.

Thank you.

Hi,

As your income from self employment is more than £1000.00, you meet the criteria to complete a self assessment tax return, even if no tax is payable.

Only after we have received your tax returns, can you appeal the penalties .

Guidance on appealing the penalties can be found at :

Self Assessment: appeal against penalties for late filing and late payment  .

Thank you.
