Hi, I moved to UK in Jul 2024 and started a job in Aug 2024. Before that I was living and working overseas. Could I check if I just need to complete a self-assessment covering the period from August 2024 onwards?

Not HMRC...if you dont complete a SA return you wont claim split year basis (if eligible) which means you would be tax resident for the full year as over 183 days and liable in the UK on the period 6 April 2024 to arrival also...dependent on any Double Taxation Agreement with country you migrated from. You should complete a SA return and claim split year basis (if eligible) on residence pages (SA109) as part of this...which means it will need to be paper or commercial software, not via HMRC system.
