Hi, I am currently in a sales job which has commission so im never going to know how much I have earned in a year until the end of the year. Im also an uber driver part time. I haven't gone over the 1k allowance yet but when I do, do I need to register as self employed or just wait until April to fill out a self assessment form? Basically im not sure if I need to register now or wait until April. If i need to register what, how and where do i do it?

Hi Ana,
Please use the guidance in the link below to check if you need to tell HMRC about additional income:

Hi Bradley Maybury,
Ideally, for your own convenience, you should register for Self Employment as soon as you know that you will be due to pay tax on your Self Employment income.
You can do so here:
What a sole trader is
Thank you.

I currently have a full time job but will taking on a bit of extra work self employed. It will be over the £1000 threshold at appx £2000-£3000 per year. Will I be able to claim any working from home expenses against that amount?

Hello, I am employed full time, but I am considering picking up a flexible side job that is considered self employed. What would I need to do regarding tax nd when would I need to fill out the relevant forms?

Hi jatin Sharma,
If your income from evri is below £1000, this will be covered by the trading allowance and you will not need to complete a tax return to declare this. You can see guidance here:
Tax-free allowances on property and trading income
You can always review whether you need to complete a Self Assessment return here:
Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return
Thank you.

Hi RPDean,
If your gross self employment income will be greater than £1000 in the tax year then you will need to register as self employed and complete a Self Assessment tax return at the tax year end: Check how to register for Self Assessment
Thank you.

Hi,
It can take up to 5 working days for the payment to be processed. If you check your online account after 5 working days and if the payment is not shown then you can contact HMRC to trace and allocate the payment.
Thank you.

Hi, I have a part time job of 16 hours at NHS I have just passed a nail technician course and want do get started on setting up my own buisness, do I need to register as self employed? I have just started advertising and haven't yet get any clients, so my earnings will be minimal for a good few months. Just wondering what I need to do seen as I am classed as employed also? Thanks

I am mainly employed and do some self-employed buying and selling as well. Each year I complete a self-assessment every year but last tax year my self-employed income was approximately £750 (£3000 income and £2250 expenses) due to my employed work taking precedent. Do I qualify for the £1000 trading allowance or do I have to pay tax on the £750.

Hi, I just started a part time job at 16 hours. The employer tells me I have to invoice them the hours over 16 as self employed. Would that be a lawful practice? I'm already registered as a sole trader with minimal profits, is that registration same as self employed or I need something else?
Posted Thu, 28 Nov 2024 09:03:52 GMT by HMRC Admin 20 Response
Hi Desislava,
If already registered as a sole trader you will be registered for Self Assessment and been allocated a Unique Tax Reference, UTR.
If starting a new self employed job you will need to register the new self employment but will still use the same UTR to submit your Self Assessment tax return.
You can register the new self employment at Set up as a sole trader: step by step
Thank you.

Hello Desislava, We are the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (or LITRG - an educational tax charity). Your engager needs to check if you are employed or self-employed and deal with you accordingly. Your employment status is not a matter of choice. You can find more information in HMRC's factsheet: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/employment-status-factsheet-esfs1/employment-status-factsheet-esfs1. Hope this helps.
