Hi There, I 2 weeks ago received a self assessment penalty from 2019 which is now at £1780. I have never been self employed and pay my taxes every month through the company i am employed with. Also had i received the original fine back in 2019 then i would have raised the issue then. I find it very unfair to be hit with an unknown penalty such as this. I have appealed the penalty but it says nothing can be done until i file my self assessment which makes no sense as I am not self employed. Please can you help me sort this mistake out. Thank you.

Hi James Godfrey,

There are other criteria for Self Assessment outside of self employment, you can check our criteria here:

Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return

If after checking the tool you are still unsure why we are requesting a return, you will need to contact our Self Assessment team:

Hi, Upon realising my gateway logins were wrong and there is somehow 3 accounts under my UTR, I have several messages on there saying I did not file a return for year 2021-2022. I did work self employed for one week so it came under the £1000 allowance, I called HMRC after receiving a letter earlier in the year stating a £100 fine to confirm that I would not need to file a self assessment tax return. The bloke I spoke to confirmed that I did not need to and said he would sort it out on his end. Now the fines come to £1200 and I have until 22 Sep 2022 to pay it, no contact has been made via my email or mobile or by post. I have now filed the return confirming I earned less than £1000, will this remove the fines from my account or do I still need to contact HMRC on your totally useless and unstaffed contact centre? Regards Paul

Hi,

There would not be any penalties yet for 21/22 as the due dates for this return is 31/10/22 for paper and 31/01/2023 for online.

You should contact our helpline again to check the position, if we have not yet cancelled the return that the penalties are for,
we will be able to provide a timescale for when this will be actioned.

Thank you.

Like all the above completed last self cert 2019, advised no longer s/e, went online to check future pension and saw messages with penalty notice etc for non completion of self cert last 2 years, advised no longer s/e online last December and advised would hear in 15days, how is this right. I have completed another form today online + printed off form and posted and another form to state not s/e + even done self cert for this year stating no income just in case, what more do you have to do, think your doing everything right, just need a response?

I am now calling you to confirm this currently been on phone 25 minutes, would help if knew where you was in the queue. Checking my emails I also requested to cancel paperless notification from 19/12/21 so I would receive letters through in post, as saw received late payment advice then ,this was when advised didn't need to complete self assessment?
