Hello, I have 2 kids - and I claim Child Benefit for both which comes up to circa £1827 per year which I get from the government. As I recently fell into the 60K tax bracket, I expected that I need to repay this £1800 back to the govt. However, I got a PAYE change letter from HMRC which says that Child Benefit is £4712. Can you help me understand how the £1827 changed to £4712 Below is from the HMRC site: How your tax-free amount is calculated How we calculate it Previous tax code Current tax code Personal Allowance £12,570 £12,570 Additions Gift Aid Payments £388 £175 Job expenses £312 £312 Total additions £700 £487 Deductions Underpayment from previous year You underpaid £549 tax in a previous tax year £1,373 £1,373 Child Benefit £0 £4,712 Estimated tax you owe this year We estimate you have underpaid £658.00 tax £0 £2,743 Other items from <> £380 £380 Total deductions £1,753 £9,208 Your total tax-free amount £11,517 £3,849

Hi,

The Child benefit amount is not £4712, this is the deduction we would put in your tax code, and you would pay 40 percent of that figure.

If this was in your tax code since the start of the tax year, you would pay back one twelth of the amount each month. However at the end of August we would have missed five twelths of the amount, which would result in an underpayment so far this year.

If you contact our Income Tax team they will be able to view the code and give you an explanation.

Hi ska2023,
You would not meet the criteria for the higher income child benefit charge.
You can check if you meet Self Assessment criteria at Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return
Thank you.

Hi, I have two children and opted out from child benefit payments about two years ago as my income went above 60k. However, a child benefit deduction of £5,187 is still included in the calculation of my tax-free amount in the PAYE Income Tax summary for this year (the same happened last year). I have sent an enquiry twice through my personal tax account but never got a reply back. Could you please assist? Thank you

Hi dondiego,
I'm sorry if that deduction appeared in your code when it was no longer appropriate.
We can certainly amend that for you.

Hi DThyag

Your tax code would be updated to collected the HICBC at source going forward.
We would need to access your record to review the tax code to check the deduction made. You can contact us at Contact HMRC

Thank you

I currently receive child benefit for 2 children. Circa £1,900. I have fallen into the £60k+ bracket for tax and had to complete a self assessment. My tax calculation came back stating that I owe £2466.80 and given the option that this can be taken through my tax code or one off payment. Why is the amount owed more than the amount of child benefit received?

Hi pjrat14

We would need to review your calculation to check why the balance is more than expected.
If you submit your Self Assessment tax return and allow 3 working days to process and then contact HMRC we can review this for you.
If an amendment is needed this can then be done.
