Does one qualify for automatic National Insurance credits if getting Working Tax Credits ( WTC) and the disability element of this? I have looked at the government website for NI and one says you may get automatic credits but what is the criteria for this? Another government website as well as other websites like Which say you will get automatic class 1 NI credits if you get WTC with the disabilty premium or class 3 if no disability but you get WTC . I rung both the Tax credits office and NI helpline- neither knew anything.

All tax credits customers who qualify for Working Tax Credit (WTC) also attract a National Insurance Credit (class 1 or class 3) which contributes towards their final retirement pension. The credit is always awarded to the WTC recipient.

The class 1 NI credit is only awarded when the recipient also receives a tax credits disability element.

Thank you.

Hi if this is the case then why does the tax credits helpline and NI helpline not know this? And when is the record updated as mine is still not showing an update? Or who do I contact please?

Hi neeta Jain
I can’t comment on the Helpline’s knowledge.
Credits are normally posted after the relevant tax year has ended, however NI credits isn’t my speciality and I am unable to comment on how long it takes to post.
You will probably need to speak with someone in the NI department.
