Is VAT registration needed in Germany when a UK-based business sells equipment or services?

We are a VAT-registered system integrator in the UK. When we sell communication equipment or related services, e.g., maintenance services, to a customer in Germany who is VAT-registered there, do we also need to register for VAT in Germany?
