I'm requested to change business/Trading name for my VAT account but it shows pending changes and after few days its getting reverted back to old name. I'm a sole proprietor and I want to update to my name. Any pointers on how to get this updated please?

Hi,

There have been recent changes to the way HMRC deals with name changes.

If you are a sole trader then you would firstly change your details with Self Assessment. These changes will then be passed to VAT and the change will then take place.

Please allow at least 15 working days for these changes to occur.

Hi, Thanks for sharing the details. Do you have the procedures documented somewhere how I can change the name using self assessment? When I login using my gateway ID, it takes me to business tax section page only and I couldnt fine the self assessment page anywhere, can you please guide how I can do? Any help provided will be greatly appreciated as my Amazon account got suspended as I couldnt complete the verification and if I dont complete it sooner then I will end up in great lose. One more thing I want to check, when I downloaded the VAT certificate last year, it did come up with business and trading name. But now its coming only with trading name, is it possible to download the VAT certificate with business name as well, as this will sort all the problems for me as Amazon is looking for VAT under my name which is missing in the certificate even though my name is under business name? Note: I was trying to change the name using VAT management page for more than week without knowing the process has changed, as I always get notification that it will be updated in 2 working days. Would suggest to change this message with the new process with the details of how to change, this will help whoever is trying and failing like me. Thank you, Arun

I’m an agent working with a client to update their trading name, but we’ve been unsuccessful so far. The request remains pending before ultimately being rejected. Upon reviewing their VAT details, I’ve found that while their business name is correct, their trading name is not. This discrepancy is impacting their Amazon account, as they’re unable to complete the verification process. The VAT online checker is displaying the outdated trading name, which is the information we need updated. I called the VAT hotline, and they directed me to the VAT Change of Circumstances department, advising me to email and send a letter outlining the issue to vatchangeofcircs@hmrc.gov.uk. I sent these on September 26th, but we’ve had no response, and the trading name remains unchanged. Could you please advise on the next steps? After reading this post, I considered it might be linked to their Sole Trader name, but that appears correct in their business account. Please note - The client has tried to update this via their business tax account, we have tried through our agent account, we have sent emails and letters and made several phone calls. Every phone call we either get directed to another line who cannot help us or ask us to email in, our efforts have been extensive at this point.

I am sorry you are having such a problem with this.
We do need to urgently refer this over to our Variations Department to confirm why the request was refused and for them to resolve the problem so please speak with our Helpline on 0300 200 3700 so that we can complete the referral needed to resolve this.
