My other half is self employed/sole trader who expects to need to register for VAT soon - so we've been trying to get things lined up ready - including making sure her Government Gateway access is working and ready. When logged in, clicking the link to Business Tax Account offers "Add a tax to your account to get online access to a tax, duty or scheme". Following this, selecting "VAT and VAT services, for example EC Sales List", then "VAT", then "No" to having a VAT number, it says "To register for VAT and manage your VAT online, you need to have an organisation account. The account you currently have is a personal account." Would greatly appreciate if you could confirm whether a self employed/sole trader - despite being a person and not an organisation - needs to create an 'Organisational' ID in order to register for VAT?

An organisation account will be required for this and for other VAT services.

Thank you.

Hi, We registered for VAT in October last year but we are unable to add the VAT account to our Government Gateway account. When logged in to the Business Taxes account we Select 'Manage account' from the top Select ‘Add a tax, duty or scheme’, Select the ‘VAT and VAT services …’ option and continue, Select ‘VAT’ and continue Enter the VAT number Then we receive a message "Sorry, we’re experiencing technical difficulties Please try again in a few minutes." We have been trying this repeatedly for several months. I have tried phoning the online help line and was put on hold and then cutoff after 1 hour. Because our VAT account is not assigned to our Government Gateway account we are unable to file a VAT return that is now past due. Please advise how to resolve this issue.

Unfortunately we have already tried all of the channels described in "Get help using VAT online services" 1. Customer helpline said that they were unable to help. 2. Email help said to keep trying. 3. Webchat is not available until April 2022 Are there any other methods of seeking help from HMRC?

The only way to resolve this issue is via the Digital channel and that would  be reporting via'report a page'.

If you have done this before please could you do this again and quote any references that you have been given before.

The Digital Team should come back to you within 48 hours.

Thank you.
