Good morning I submitted my claim at the beginning of May? I have tried ringing the team to check progress but they are not accepting calls - automatic switch off? What can do now please?

Hello Is there a particular time of the day when it is easier to get a telephone response? Thank you. Jac

I submitted by claim end of July 22 and I received a letter last week stating I'll be paid within 10 working days. I contacted my local MP who has been very helpful chasing through her political connections at HMRC. I would suggest doing the same.

Kathy Re your post and mine above…….I finally got through by telephone today, (took a while for the call to be answered ) Wed 4th Jan, and spoke to a helpful young lady who reassured me my claim had been received and logged. I sent mine end of September 2022. The lady notified me the claims being processed now are those from July so I just have to be patient. But you….May? Best of luck. J.

Thank you.

We submitted our VAT claim in December, on the form it stated that our application would be acknowledged within 5 days and we would be receiving a Claim Reference Number. It has almost been a month and we have received nothing. We have tried on numerous occasions to contact the VAT DIY team but have been unable to get through. We are relying on the VAT reclaim monies to pay off the monies we have borrowed towards the new build house and we are getting desperate. Reading the earlier posts on this forum this does not inspire us with any confidence that our claim will be processed anytime soon. Even an acknowledgement would be useful at this stage.

I submitted our claim in September 2022 by registered post and received proof of delivery. As yet, 4 months later, I have heard nothing from HMRC, no acknowledgement, reference number or anything. I am having to add my VAT to a mortgage, so the delay in response has a real cost to me. Apart of course from receiving the VAT refund, it would be useful to know two things. 1. My application has been received, a reference number for queries, and that I am in the queue for processing. 2. When I can expect payment. I hope my application form and receipts are sitting on a dusty shelf somewhere? Given its been four months now, when can I expect to receive my claim reference number?

I cannot contact you on this number. It simply says you are too busy to answer the phone and disconnects, I can't even wait in a queue. Please can you therefore advise on this forum why claim reference numbers are not being sent out, and how long processing is likely to take?

Hi oldsteel,

We havt spoken with the DIY Team and they have insisted that although the DIY contact line is busy they are still taking calls.

Please try calling again.

They are currently working on claims which were received in July and at this point they would write to you to acknowledge the claim.

Thank you.

Hi None of your responses are helpful. As I said on my previous post the DIY team cannot give timescales, they cannot even tell me whether my application has been received. Please can you stop giving us advise which is basically taking us around in a circle and help. Like so many others on here I have bills to pay and am reliant on receiving this money in the timescales you specify. Waiting 9 months is really not acceptable. I also have a self-employed tax bill to pay at the end of the month and would like confirmation that you will not charge interest on this account as I cannot pay it until you pay me the Vat owed to me. Regards

Thanks for this information. Can you tell me what timescales you have for processing and responding to complaints or is this too a similar timescale to processing refunds?

Hi All. I submitted my claim mid-August and today received all the hard copies of invoices I had sent back by in the post with acknowledgement they are currently processing my claim. They have asked for proof of payment on some invoices that were in my ex-husbands name to be returned within max 4 weeks but was a pleasant surprise to hear from the team at last.

I'm also waiting for my refund, why are there so many delays? Will we be compensated?
Posted Fri, 03 Feb 2023 12:15:07 GMT by Kathy Anstey
I hope this is encouraging to those of you waiting I submitted in the second week of May. The only contact I had initially was a text in June to say they had received it and not to contact them because there would be a delay due to limited resources. I waited til August. Rang and was told my claim no over the phone. There was a backlog. At the end of September they were processing March claims In December they wrote asking for the address of the property - this put another month or so’s delay into the process despite my reply by return. On 12 January they said they expected to deal with claim by 23 February. This morning(3 February) I received all my invoices back - all bar one approved- and a promise of payment in10 working days. Hang on in there and good luck!

Dear DIY VAT reclaim team. In absence of the helpline (still no answer there). Can you tell me how I should deal with invoices in Euros? Also, Also, we are a couple building this house, we have a Pound mortgage account but also need to use a Euro account that is in my name not my husbands. So far we have collected all VAT invoices in my husbands name. Will this cause problems in case we need to prove payment of a Euro invoice (banks statement is in my name, the invoice in my husbands?) Should we have the Euro invoices made out in both our names? Also, what exchange rate do I need to use for the form? Thanks

Regarding your invoices that are in EUROS please refer to the link here :

With regards the names on the invoices please include a covering letter regarding this Q23 on claim form :
