Q: When do I start paying the new National Minimum Wage rates?

A: The most recent National Minimum Wage rates came into force on 1 April 2020. The rate of NMW payable for a pay reference period is the rate in force on the first day of the pay reference period.

If the pay reference period starts prior to 1 April then the old rates apply for this period followed by the new rates for the next period.
If the pay reference period starts on or after 1 April then the new rates apply immediately.

Q: What if I make a mistake and don’t apply the new rates at the right time?

A: You need to correct this immediately, and pay the arrears in the next PRP period.
